1917, 5 May – Batley News

This week’s round-up of pieces from the Batley News relating to St Mary’s parish is limited to a couple of non-military pieces. As ever, the spelling and punctuation matches that of the newspaper.

There was one parish death in the family notices column:

LYONS. —On 3rd inst., aged 53 years, Ann, wife of John Lyons, 19, Back Richmond Street.

Ann’s death would have consequences for her son, James Lyons, which the paper reported on in the following week’s edition.

The Dewsbury Tribunal had a prolonged sitting on Wednesday to review cases in which exemption from military service had been granted to men earlier in the war, when the call for recruits was not so urgent. One of those cases reviewed was that of Edward Whelan, reported as follows:

Exemption Certificates Reviewed

The following cases, in which exemption had previously been granted, were reviewed:-

…Edward Whelan (21), Victoria Street, Batley Carr, miller and scourer for John Fenton and Sons, Ltd., Headfield Mills, was granted conditional exemption, his health not being satisfactory
