This week’s round-up of pieces St Mary’s pieces from the Batley News is entirely Home Front based. The spelling and punctuation matches that of the newspaper.


Schools news included the passing of minutes from various Education Committees:

Continuation and Technical Schools Sub-Committee.

That the following appointments be made in the Continuation and Technical Schools for the Sessions 1917-18, on the understanding that they include such transfers from one school to another, at the same rate of pay, as may be found necessary during the Session.

Two parish deaths were in the Deaths column.

BATLEY,
NAFSEY. —On the 25th inst., aged five months, Ronald Nafsey, 13, East Street.
NUNNS. —On the 25th inst., aged four months, Joseph, son of James P. Nunns, 10, Villiers Street

Note the surname NUNNS, as printed in the newspaper, should actually read MUNNS.


Finally for this week parishioners Mary Ann Kelly and Thomas Kilroy were before the magistrates.

TO-DAY’S BATLEY POLICE.

For using obscene language in Victoria Street, on Saturday. Eliza Sharman, charwoman, was fined 10s. For a like offence on the same day, Mary Ann Kelly, of New Street was fined 10s. and costs. Thirteen previous convictions were recorded against Sharman and five against Kelly. “You can take me for it,” said Kelly, “because I shan’t pay it.” —The Chairman (Mr. W. H. Childe): Well, you have the option of doing 14 days.


“I don’t intend to pay,” said Thomas Kilroy, miner, no fixed abode, who was summoned for failing to pay £10 3s. to his wife, Margaret Kilroy, 1, Borough Road, Batley, under a maintenance order. Complainant said she had seven children only one of whom was working. Defendant had paid nothing for 13 weeks. —Defendant said he had been ill part of the time. —He was committed to prison for 54 days in default of payment.
