Here is this week’s round-up of pieces from the Batley News relating to the parish of St Mary’s. As usual I have put in bold the names of those connected to the parish who served with the military. And, as ever, the spelling and punctuation matches that of the newspaper.
The newspaper contained news of death of former parishioner Dominick Dan Jordan, whose family still lived in Batley.
More Batleyites Killed
Sergt. Dominick Jordan (36), Canadians, a brother of Mrs. Pheeney, Jacob Street, Woodwell, is reported by his Captain to have fallen in action on April 25th. Before emigrating to Canada some years ago he worked at Soothill Wood Colliery.
The photo of Richard Carroll Walsh, missing in action, appeared in this week’s newspaper. His biography can be read here.
Another parishioner reported missing was Patrick Carney.
Schoolboy Swimmer Who Joined the Territorials
We shall give next week a photo of Pte. Patrick Carney (20), one of the soldier sons of Mr, Andrew Carney, 43, Hume Street, Batley, who is posted as missing between the 20th and 23rd March, about the time when he should have completed his four years’ period in the local Territorials. A mere boy, he mobilised with his Battalion when war broke out, and went to France. He was wounded last year. He was one of the champion swimmers of St. Mary’s School, Batley. A brother, Pte. Lawrence Carney, K.O.Y.L.I., died of wounds in France in 1916. Two others, Sapper James Carney, R.E., and Driver Michael Carney, R.E., are serving in France.
The biography of Lawrence Carney, who in fact died in a Warrington Military Hospital, can be found here.
Finally for this week’s parish news, the Death Notices included the following:
