1918, 16 March – Batley News

There was one Batley News piece relating to the parish of St Mary’s. As usual I have put in bold the names of those connected to the parish who served with the military. And, as ever, the spelling and punctuation matches that of the newspaper.

A letter from Walter Waite, who in 1920 married Mary Ellen Hunt (formerly Cairns), the widow of St Mary’s War Memorial man Michael Hunt, was published this week:

Carlinghow Gunner’s Tribute to General Maude

Gunner Walter Waite, R.F.A., son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Waite, Beck Lane, Carlinghow, in a letter from the Far East, says:-

“You will have heard about our leader dying under such tragic circumstances, and I can assure you he is mourned by us all. He was a gallant leader and a soldier’s friend, and we have him to thank for the successs of our operations during the last twelve months. He will go down in history as one who died at the height of his fame.

General Stanley Maude died in November 1917 from cholera, in what is now Iraq.
