Here is this week’s round-up of pieces from the Batley News relating to the parish of St Mary’s. As usual I have put in bold the names of those connected to the parish who served with the military. And, as ever, the spelling and punctuation matches that of the newspaper.
Frank Cairns was in trouble with the authorities:
Frank Cairns, miner, Spa Street, Batley, pleaded guilty to being drunk and incapable on Saturday. —Constable Worsfold said that at 11.15 p.m. he and Sergt. Hebden found defendant lying in the road in a very drunken condition. —A previous conviction was reported, and defendant was fined 8s.
A parishioner, Michael O’Hara, was remembered by his family in the Roll of Honour section.
O’HARA. —In loving memory of Private Michael James O’Hara, aged 21 years, killed in action in France, September 3rd, 1916.
A brave young heart that knew no fear,
He like a soldier fell;
But the unknown grave is the saddest blow,
None but our aching hearts doth know.
We think of him in silence,
His name we oft recall;
There is nothing left to answer us
But his photo on the wall.
Deeply mourned by his father, mother, sisters and brother, East Street, Batley
