Here is this week’s round-up of pieces from the Batley News relating to the parish of St Mary’s. As usual I have put in bold the names of those connected to the parish who served with the military. And, as ever, the spelling and punctuation matches that of the newspaper.
An incident in New Street ended up in Batley Court:
Batley Court – Monday.
TROUBLE IN NEW STREET. – Mary Ann Kelly, married woman, 43, New Street, pleaded not guilty to a charge of having assaulted Mary Ann Massey, widow, also of New Street.
—- Complainant said that last week she was summoned to appear at Court as a witness against Mrs. Kelly. When the policeman had left the summons and gone away, Mrs. Kelly came into her house, called her foul names and gave her a good thrashing, striking her face and tearing her hair. After turning her out complainant had to lock the door until defendant “cooled down.” —Mrs. Kelly alleged that complainant had set ugly rumours afloat about her. “I was not going to stand there all week and hear her and three witnesses giving me “slaver” without doing something,” she added. Six previous convictions were reported against Mrs. Kelly, who was ordered to pay 15s.
The Roll of Honour, compiled from War Office casualty lists, contained some names linked to the parish, as follows:
