1917, 22 September – Batley News

Here is this week’s round-up of pieces from the Batley News relating to the parish of St Mary’s. None relate to those serving in the military. Spelling and punctuation matches that of the newspaper.

There was one death notice relating to the parish in the births, marriages and deaths columns:

BATLEY

OWENS. —On the 20th., aged 10 months, Joseph, son of John T. Owens, 63, Field Lane.

A parishioner was up before the local magistrates:

Carlinghow Woman Too Drunk to Stand

Mrs. Catherine Lyons, Beck Lane, Carlinghow, was fined 8s for having been drunk and incapable in Cemetery Road at 9.20 p.m. on Monday. —Constable Bentley said he found the woman lying across the footpath, apparently asleep. He and Sergt. Hewitt shook her and tried to get her on her feet, but she was in such a drunken condition that she could not stand. She could give no account of herself, but commenced to shout and use filthy language. They had to carry her to Batley Police Station. —Inspector Ripley said there were two previous convictions, in 1906 and 1910 for drunkenness and abusive language respectively. —Councillor Ben Turner said the incident was regrettable. “I hope you will remember,” he added, “that there is a war on and that there is trouble enough without getting drunk.”
