Here is this week’s round-up of pieces from the Batley News relating to the parish of St Mary’s. As usual I have put in bold the names of those connected to the parish who served with the military. And, as ever, the spelling and punctuation matches that of the newspaper.
In local police news:
Batley Court – Monday.
For having been drunk and riotous in Victoria Street, Carlinghow, on Saturday night, Thomas Cairns, miner, of that address, against whom three previous convictions were recorded, was fined 20s., or 11 days.
More news came in about Martin Gallagher’s death:
A CROSS BANK VICTIM.
Private Martin Gallagher’s death was reported in last week’s “News.” He had been missing since September 15th, and he is now reported to have been killed on that date. He was brought up at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and School, and when he joined the Colours on the outbreak of war he was working as a labourer for Messrs. Goodall Bros., contractors, Batley. He was 34 years of age, and had seen seven years’ service in the Militia.
