1916, 28 October – Batley News

No news relating to serving parishioners feature in this week’s round-up of pieces from the Batley News relating to St Mary’s. But there were snippets from the Home Front. As ever, the spelling and punctuation matches that of the newspaper.

One parishioner found himself in Batley Court on Monday:

BATLEY MINER’S BAD LANGUAGE. —John Gavaghan, miner, Batley, was summoned by Frederick Johnson, insurance agent, Bond Street, Dewsbury, for using obscene language. He pleaded guilty, and when asked why he did not appear the previous Friday, he said he thought the summons was to be withdrawn. Prosecutor stated that on Thursday, the 11th inst., he was in Upper Commercial Street with his wife, when defendant came alongside and started using obscene language to them. Afterwards he apologised and asked him to withdraw the summons. Prosecutor said he would see Mr. Wilman, the magistrates’ clerk, about it, but he was told the summons could not be withdrawn without coming to Court. —Defendant, who expressed regret, said he offered to apologise through the papers and pay all expenses. Supt. Barraclough reported 25 previous convictions against the defendant, the last being in 1905. —The Mayor: You will have to pay 8s. and 12[d?] costs. You have had a decent [record since?] 1905, keep it up.

Note the print in places is very faint so some words were difficult to read.

The monthly meeting of Batley Education Committee held on Monday had some St Mary’s items of interest.

The following School Management Committee recommendation was adopted:

That as a matter of grace blinds be provided for evening classes held in St. Mary’s R.C. School, and that if the evening classes cease the managers be allowed the opportunity of purchasing the blinds.

The Secretary of the Caretakers’s Sub-Committee reported that Mrs. Mara was unable to continue the work at St Mary’s R. C. School and had resigned. Mr. W. Harkin was temporarily appointed in Mrs. Mara’s place.

The Secondary Education Committee adopted recommendations included that Miss Catherine O’Rourke be appointed trained certified assistant mistress at St Mary’s Boys’ School at £80 per annum; that Miss Elizabeth Murphy be appointed uncertified assistant mistress at St Mary’s Girls’ School at £65; and that Mrs. Bleeze be transferred to St Mary’s Girls’ Department as a temporary certificated mistress at £90.
